Single-Sided Tape, Single-Coated Tape, or Single-Faced Tape, is most commonly known in everyday terms as Adhesive Tape. PSA (Pressure-Sensitive Adhesive) tape sticks without any heat or solvent for activation and adheres with light pressure.
This sticky tape consists of a backing material coated on one side with a pressure-sensitive adhesive, supplied with a release liner, or is self-wound. The backing materials also referred to as a carrier, vary according to application. Common backings include film, foam, foil, cloth, or paper face stock.
Selecting the right adhesive also requires an understanding of the application and how the adhesive interacts with the backing. Acrylic adhesives can be either water-based, solvent-based, or pure acrylic, provide excellent environmental resistance and are used on a variety of surfaces. Rubber-based adhesives are divided into natural and synthetic rubber, best for indoor applications. Silicone adhesives are considerably more expensive but are used for their excellent high-temperature performance and chemical resistance.
Depending on the combination of backings, adhesives, and formats, single-coated tapes are used in a variety of industrial and medical applications from holding and sealing to identifying, masking, protecting, splicing, and more. Often single-sided tapes are referred to by the application such as Medical Tape, Electrical Tape, Masking Tape, Packaging Tape, Strapping Tape, to name a few.
